The Norwegian musical laboratory Leprous is making a quick return to the Czech Republic after their impressive performance at this year’s Brutal Assault! On February 9, Prague’s Roxy club will be taken over by a fusion of progressive metal, art rock, and electronic music. For fans of sophisticated guitar-driven music, this is a must-see!
Leprous was formed in 2001 in Notodden, Norway, and originally functioned as the backing band for Ihsahn (ex-Emperor), which opened the doors to a wider audience. They began carving out their own path with their debut album Tall Poppy Syndrome (2009), which showcased their ability to combine progressive metal technique with melodic sensitivity. Since then, the band has steadily grown into one of the most distinctive acts on the modern prog scene.
Their sound has undergone a significant evolution—from heavier, more metal-oriented beginnings to much more open and emotional directions. Albums such as Coal (2013) and The Congregation (2015) are built on contrasts between dark, tense atmospheres and the striking vocals of Einar Solberg. Later records, especially Malina (2017) and Pitfalls (2019), marked a strong shift towards art rock and electronic elements.
Leprous’s music is defined by its original rhythm work, use of contrasts, and a strong emphasis on vocal lines, which often become the main carriers of emotion. Their visual and stage presentation is also distinctive—their live shows are precise, emotional, and often surprisingly intimate. Thanks to this, Leprous have earned a reputation as a band that can captivate not only progressive metal fans but also a broader audience in search of music that balances technical sophistication with deep emotional impact.
Crystal Horizon is a rising star of the Norwegian progressive rock scene, drawing significant attention in 2024 with the release of their eponymous debut EP. The band formed around 2021 in Kristiansand, southern Norway, among music students at the University of Agder, a background that is clearly reflected in their technical proficiency and compositional precision. Their sound delicately balances classic 1970s art-rock influences with a modern, atmospheric approach to prog that is characteristic of the Norwegian school.
Ihlo is a British progressive metal outfit that, following their rapid breakthrough in 2019 with the album Union, has established itself as one of the most compelling names on the contemporary scene. Their sound is a masterful fusion of technical djent, atmospheric art rock, and strong pop sensibilities. Hallmarks of their songwriting include rich layers of synthesizers, emotive vocal lines, and a seamless ability to transition from fragile melancholy to crushing rhythmic passages. Their latest release, Legacy, further deepens their compositional complexity and confirms their position as leaders of the new wave of British prog, which places equal emphasis on modern sonic aesthetics and technical precision.
